I recently saw Blade: Trinity on Netflix so the Daywalker is pretty fresh in my mind. That’s why with the Blade prompt for Inktober this year, there was only one choice for my subject — mah boi Wesley Snipes. Specifically, I used one of the posters for the first Blade movie as a reference.

I had to pick between a more comic book look with dark heavy outlines and a more painterly style. I eventually decided to do the latter so I could practice using painting brushes in drawing figures.

Drawing the head was the biggest challenge for me. I could barely draw a decent front-facing human face so it’s no surprise that from an unconventional angle, I drew a Wesley Snipes that kind of looks like a mutated white man or maybe an alien.

The first Blade movie was one of the earliest signs that more mature, non-goofy comic book movies could work. I mean, it was still pretty goofy, but the movie knew how silly it was for a half-vampire anti-hero using martial arts to fight full-vampires so it didn’t really take itself seriously all the time.

The second and third movies in the franchise didn’t fully live up to the first, but they’re still a fun set of pre-MCU Marvel movies to watch.

This drawing though did mostly live up to my expectations of being difficult at first but getting easier as the figure slowly reveals itself.
